Specter

CONCEPT

Desktop ghost companion that reacts to your system and chats back

2026-03-06

Specter is a desktop companion app built around the idea that software can feel a little haunted in a good way. Instead of living in a dock icon or a browser tab, it floats on the screen as a transparent ghost pet that watches your environment, comments on what is happening, and gradually becomes part mascot, part toy, part ambient interface.

The planned stack is Electron plus a lightweight canvas rendering layer, with behavior driven by system telemetry and chat inputs. That combination makes it possible to experiment with presence, animation, and reactive personality without treating the app like a conventional windowed utility.

Right now it is a concept with enough definition to be dangerous. The next milestone is proving the core loop: a ghost that feels alive because it notices useful signals from the machine, responds to them in character, and stays delightful instead of intrusive over long sessions.
